Choosing a doula is one of the most meaningful decisions you can make during pregnancy. This is someone who will be with you during one of the most vulnerable, powerful, and transformative experiences. Beyond trainings or experience (and those are important), what truly matters is how you feel in their presence... Do you feel safe, supported, and seen? And maybe this is the starting point to ask a bigger question, How do I want to feel during labor and birth?
If you’re beginning your search, these questions can help guide your conversations and give you a deeper sense of who each doula is and how they work. Read to the end to get my favorite questions for doulas.
Experience & Background
Start by understanding their foundation and experience
How long have you been working as a doula?
How many births have you attended?
What types of births do you have the most experience with (home, hospital, birth center, VBAC, etc.)?
What training or certifications do you have?
Do you have experience with clients who have similar goals to mine?
Philosophy & Approach
These questions are less about “right or wrong” answers and more about alignment. Every doula brings their own perspective and energy into the birth space and you want someone whose philosophy resonates with you.
How would you describe your approach to birth support?
What does “support” look like to you during labor?
How do you balance supporting me vs. supporting my partner?
How do you feel about interventions (epidurals, inductions, cesareans)?
What does a “positive birth experience” mean to you?
Prenatal & Postpartum Support
Support extends beyond the birth itself. This clarifies what care looks like before and after.
How many prenatal visits do you offer, and what do they include?
Do you help with birth planning?
What kind of postpartum support do you provide?
How long do you stay after the birth?
Are you available for questions during pregnancy via text or phone?
Labor & Birth Support
This is where your doula’s presence will be most felt. These questions will help you understand how they show up.
When do you join me during labor?
Will you stay the entire time, no matter how long labor lasts?
What comfort techniques do you use (movement, massage, rebozo, breathwork, etc.)?
How do you support if things don’t go as planned?
Have you worked with my birth location/provider before?
Communication & Compatibility
Connection and communication are everything in the birth space.
How do you typically communicate with clients?
What can I expect from you emotionally during labor?
How do you handle situations where a client’s wishes change?
What do you need from me to best support me?
Investment & Details
Clarity around the exchange helps everything feel grounded and transparent.
What is your fee, and what does it include?
Do you offer payment plans?
What is your refund or cancellation policy?
Are there any additional costs?
My favorite questions to ask when interviewing doulas
These questions invite deeper connection and insight into who they are. This person will potentially be with you during one of the most transformative events. When I was a doula it was
What does it mean to you to hold space for someone in birth?
How do you care for yourself so you can show up fully for your clients?
How do you honor a birth that unfolds differently than expected?
What role do intuition and instinct play in the way you support birth?
What does support look like in quiet moments, not just active labor?
How do you help someone feel empowered in their choices?
How do you ground yourself before and during a birth?
What guides you when things become uncertain or intense?
How do you tend to fear when it arises in the birthing space?
How do you honor the emotional and spiritual layers of birth, not just the physical? In pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.
What do you hope each person feels as they cross the threshold into motherhood?
After the interview, take a quiet moment to return to yourself and listen inward. Notice how your body feels, how your breath moves, what gently rises within you. Do you feel safe, seen, and truly heard? Can you soften and relax in their presence? Can you envision them beside you in pregnancy and birth? Let your intuition be your guide. It often knows the answer before the mind can name it.
Blessings on your journey!
